Over 50,000 Snapchat user credentials were compromised in phishing attack

Snapchat has recently been hit with a privacy breach, and the company is not completely responsible for it. According to reports, a government official from the UK informed the company about the attack last year. Snap’s director of engineering emailed his teams in response to the same. Apparently, a publicly available list embedded was found on a phishing website called klkviralorg. The website has 55.851 Snapchat accounts, including passwords and usernames.

“We are sorry when anyone is tricked by phishing. While we can’t prevent people from sharing their Snapchat credentials with third parties, we do have advanced defenses to detect and prevent suspicious activity. We encourage Snapchatters to always use strong passwords, enable login Verification, and never use third-party apps or plugins,” a spokesman for Snap told The Verge.
The hack apparently occurred in July last year, and those who were affected were informed by the company. Charles DePue, Snap’s director of engineering, asked his legal team to contact GoDaddy, the website’s host, to take it down. The phishing website in question had been blocked by Google by July 24, though it’s unclear how much the list would have been spread online by then.
