Alphabet's Eric Schmidt Believes The US Needs To Improve Its AI

Alphabet chairman Eric Schmidt believes the United States needs to dedicate more resources to artificial intelligence, otherwise, competitors in China could end up with a significant lead. He thinks the US' lead will only be maintained for another five years.
After that point, the Chinese will reach and surpass the US "extremely quickly." Schmidt focused on factors like a lack of investment from the US in basic research as well as its restrictive immigration policies.
There are "all sorts of implications" that arise from China having a strong position in AI. As per its own policy documents, China wants to use the technology for commercial and military objectives. The US should, therefore, aim to at least avoid falling behind in what some consider computer science arms race.
Schmidt also discussed the creation of artificial general intelligence. He believes we're years from having an AI system that matches or beats a human, but Alphabet's own DeepMind subsidiary has the best chance of inventing a form of general intelligence.
