Although it appeared the practice of wireless carriers tracking users and making the tracked info available to others was largely over, that doesn't seem to be the case. Philip Neustrom, co-founder of Shotwell Labs, came across websites that can yield your full name, zip code, current location, and other data when visited from a mobile connection.
The demo sites have since been taken down, but his discovery indicates carriers, including Verizon and AT&T, are still injecting info into subscriber traffic so that tracking occurs. The carriers were supposedly going to stop this practice unless subscribers explicitly opted in.
The problem now appears to be that carriers have done little to make sure subscriber consent is verified. As a result, sites that may be paying the carriers can access data on practically anyone who visits them. Malicious applications of this, such as by scam sites, haven't been uncovered, but the concern exists.
