Google is speaking with news publishers about a plan to offer subscriptions in a way that'd see the two entities share revenue, but that plan is still in its early stages. According to Google's news chief Richard Gingras, this setup would involve a revenue split that's better for publishers than ads.
Revenue sharing from these digital subscriptions would be "very very generous," says Google. However, the exact figures haven't been worked out and the company still needs to have more discussions with publishers.
Google will try to attract publishers by suggesting this kind of partnership can generate more subscriptions than would otherwise exist and subscriptions may be a better way to obtain revenue than ads.
