Most of the work in the AI field deals with actual technological advances, but there's also an expansive ethical side to the industry. DeepMind, a major AI company owned by Google, is forming a new research team that'll focus on matters of AI ethics.
Among the topics the team will discuss are the economic implications of automation and the possibility, however low, that general intelligence could pose a threat to humanity due to it not sharing an ethical framework.
Reports from DeepMind Ethics & Society will be published starting early next year. It has eight full-time employees and six unpaid "fellows." One of the fellows is philosopher Nick Bostrom, who has highlighted the existential risks associated with general AI. Bostrom's positions on the matter influenced Tesla CEO Elon Musk's thinking, though many people don't feel their concerns are well-founded.
