Cruise Automation, which GM acquired last year for $581 million, is ready to mass produce its first autonomous vehicle. For now, it has built 50 cars for a service in San Francisco. GM is essentially just on standby until the regulatory environment allows it to move forward with a fully self-driving car.
The car is going to be manufactured in GM's Orion, Michigan facility. It's fully autonomous, though it has a steering wheel.
The facility it's being created in can produce 100,000s of vehicles annually. GM says it'd "like to keep that plant busy."
Today, we're unveiling the world's first mass-producible car designed to operate without a driver.- Kyle Vogt, CEO, Cruise
