Tizen is an operating system based on the Linux kernel that was first released back in 2012, and is currently being used by Samsung in its refrigerators, televisions, smartwatches and certain smartphones, but the South Korean company plans on bringing it to more products.
According to Lee Hyo-keun, vice president of Samsung Electronics, Tizen OS will power all small-sized products such as lighting, thermometers and scales apart from major home appliances. The main goal is to be able to connect and control all devices in a home, but also reduce cost as Samsung won't have to pay a substantial amount of royalties to other OS developers.
