Andy Rubin, founder of Essential, has apologized for a mistake that led to the company accidentally sharing private customer info with other customers. A statement on the Essential blog reveals "an error in [its] customer care function" caused the problem.
One of its customer service representatives used a miconfigured account to send a single email asking for a photo ID and other info to multiple people. When those individuals responded, they ended up sharing their personal info with "a small group of other customers."
Essential is taking steps to avoid a repeat mistake and it has offered the affected customers a year of LifeLock identify theft protection.
