Nintendo has stopped manufacturing New 3DS units in Japan. An update posted to the company's Japanese websites reveals all models (white, black, and limited edition) have left production. The same message doesn't exist for the 2DS, New 2DS XL, or New 3DS XL, indicating their production hasn't changed.
Part of the reason for the change may be the newly added New 2DS XL, which Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime says is meant to be between the New 3DS XL and regular 2DS. That would indicate the handheld gaming device is essentially replacing the New 3DS.
Nintendo hasn't further expanded upon the availability of the system in other markets.
