Facebook is adding advertisements to Messenger and it'll test their presence in the service around the world. The company says it will be expanding its beta test of Messenger ads to users around the world in the coming weeks. Those ads appear on the home screen of the app.
Since the rollout of advertising in the app is taking place slowly, it'll take until later in 2017 for ads to be truly prominent.
Stan Chudnovsky, product lead at Messenger, says the inclusion of ads is based around advertising being the dominant monetization model in the industry. Advertising is "how we're going to be making money right now," he said.
