Oculus founder Palmer Luckey has created a startup in a new industry. Rather than continue working on virtual reality, his new venture involves developing border surveillance technology. That interest could be linked to his support of Donald Trump, who campaigned in favor of stronger border security.
Luckey was removed from Facebook, the owner of Oculus, after it was revealed he gave $100,000 to a pro-Trump group.
The startup uses lidar, which is often employed by autonomous vehicles, to surveil the border. It can also be used for surveillance in other areas, such as around military bases.

Lidar could be utilized to specifically detect threats (e.g. drones) while ignoring other kinds of movement, such as animals.
Peter Thiel, another Trump supporter and one of the most well-known venture capitalists, is going to support the company.
The company has a few employees already, one of whom is Christopher Dycus, a former Oculus employee.
