NIO has introduced a new autonomous vehicle concept at SXSW. Its EVE car is described as both a vehicle and a "mobile living area" that's filled with accommodations to make it comfortable for long trips. Among its features are front seats than can rotate to face the back and reclining seats that function as beds.
The electric vehicle startup is supported by Chinese venture capitalists. EVE is its first autonomous vehicle concept.
This design would let a human still take control of the car, but it's not clear if NIO will stick with that functionality.
When/if EVE is released, an AI tentatively called NOMI would be included. That assistant will be of use to passengers and be able to control the vehicle.
EVE is intended to have a 600-mile range and a charging speed of 200 miles per 10 minutes. NIO is anticipating a 2020 release.
