WikiLeaks has come out with a new set of government documents that reveal how the CIA has been hacking iPhones and Macs. The new "Dark Matter" collection of documents, which is part of WikiLeaks' Vault 7 leaks, is focused on Apple products.
One of the agency's tools, called Sonic Screwdriver, allowed the CIA to infect Macs through a USB or Thunderbolt port. Another exploit could be installed in a computer's firmware interface and be hard to uncover.
The documents in this leak are over seven years old, so they only give us insight into how the CIA was dealing with older devices.
Apple confirmed that no recent product is vulnerable to the exploits discussed in Dark Matter.
We have preliminarily assessed the Wikileaks disclosures from this morning. Based on our initial analysis, the alleged iPhone vulnerability affected iPhone 3G only and was fixed in 2009 when iPhone 3GS was released. Additionally, our preliminary assessment shows the alleged Mac vulnerabilities were previously fixed in all Macs launched after 2013.- Apple
