Xiaomi might not be present at the ongoing Mobile World Congress 2017 trade show, but the company has decided to announce several new products anyway. Today, the company announced its first in-house chipset at an event in China. The chipset is also now available, powering the new Xiaomi Mi 5c.
Xiaomi Surge S1, also known as Pinecone, features an octa-core processor with four high-performance ARM Cortex A53 cores clocked at 2.2 GHz and four power-efficient ARM Cortex A53 cores clocked at 1.4 GHz, arranged using big.LITTLE structure for efficient usage of the eight cores. Other specs include a quad-core ARM Mali T860 GPU, 32-bit DSP for voice processing, support for VoLTE and more.
Two versions are rumoured to be in the works, but the company has now unveiled only the one that is made using TSMC's 28nm HPc process technology. The Surge S1 is reportedly faster than the Snapdragon 625, which is a great sign since Xiaomi has yet to release a flagship model.
