Vizio Hit With FTC Fine For Tracking Content Viewing Habits

The FTC has hit TV maker Vizio with a $2.2 million fine for collecting data from 11 million television units. It grabbed viewer data in the form of "second-by-second information about video displayed on the smart TV, including video from consumer cable, broadband, set-top box, DVD, over-the-air broadcasts, and streaming devices."
Vizio was first met with a complaint from the FTC in 2014, when the agency discovered Vizio's data collection practices.
Information about viewing habits, which was attached to consumer demographic data, was sold to third-parties. Those companies used the information for advertising across devices, among other things.
Vizio will no longer be allowed to collect data without first receiving user authorization. All data that was stored up to this point must be deleted.
