Valve is making an effort to improve game audio, particularly in virtual reality. The company has released a Steam Audio Kit that'll help developers offer more immersive and realistic sound. That includes utilizing things like physics-based audio.
Steam Audio allows obstacles to block portions of sound. This means going around the corner of a wall will alter the sound you're exposed to, similar to real life. Reverb is also more advanced, relying on the shape of an object as well as the material it's made of.
The kit is available for free. It works with Android, Linux, Mac, and Windows devices utilizing the Unity engine. Unreal Engine 4 support will soon be added.
