Samsung wants to make sure there aren't any battery-related issues with the upcoming Galaxy S8, as well as making sure there are enough batteries available. Therefore, the company is adding a third battery supplier, Sony, alongside Samsung SDI and Amperex.
Although Sony sold its battery business to Murata, the deal is now unlikely to go through before July so the company will still be in charge of supplying batteries to Samsung. According to Wall Street Journal, Sony will only provide a small number of batteries, if the other two suppliers would have problems in production.
